Pictures of the Month (03.2009)

"Full Gale" - Todd Reed
Nothing nature dishes out overwhelms my senses experientially or photographically like being on Lake Michigan during a perfect November storm. My version of the "perfect storm" combines full-throttle wind, waves and, most importantly, "storm light." On these rare days, massive spot lit waves rise up to swallow a lighthouse whole. As the waves finish breaking, the lighthouse reappears, only to be engulfed again. The challenge as a longtime Lake Michigan photographer is to capture that rare instant when the power and beauty of the storm are maximized and yet the lighthouse is still visible enough to be identifiable as a lighthouse. This November image of the Ludington lighthouse is my most successful effort. [ Purchase This Photo ]

"Blazing Light" - Brad Reed
As the waves of Lake Michigan pounded the Ludington North Breakwater Light, I ran along the icy shore to get the correct vantage point for this photograph. With a large telephoto lens, I was able to capture the blazing light. [ Purchase This Photo ]
